HOW TO TREAT BLACKHEADS

Blackheads are considered a milder form of acne, these pore-sized polka dot spots can cause havoc on the skin, affecting not only its health but also its appearance, tone, and texture.

WHAT ARE BLACKHEADS?

Blackheads are basically clogged hair follicles or sebaceous glands caused by a combination of excess sebum (skin oil), dirt, debris, or dead skin. These blockages are most commonly found on the face, although they can form anywhere on the body where there is hair.

Whiteheads are classified as closed comedones because their contents are ‘closed' beneath a layer of skin. Blackheads, on the other hand, are characterised as open comedones because the pore's entrance is still open and vulnerable to more debris and oxidation.

WHY ARE BLACKHEADS BLACK?

While the oil and filth within the pore are the cause of the blackhead, it is the oxidation of the melanin of dead skin cells in the open pores that causes the visible black colour. Because the pore is still exposed to air and oxygen, this chemical reaction happens.

WHAT CAUSES BLACKHEADS?

Blackheads, like other breakouts, can be caused by a variety of factors. On a physical level, are caused by excess oil combining with dirt, debris, and dead skin to clog hair follicles. When this happens, it might lead to infection, such as aggressive cysts, or it can sit on or below the skin's surface as a blackhead or whitehead.

Excess oil production, as a key factor, can be caused by the environment, habit, hormones, and skin type, but it is manageable with a customised AM and PM routine. Excess bacteria or dead skin also contribute to the mix of clogged pores, which is why washing is essential for clear skin above and below the surface.

BLACKHEADS: THE GOLDEN RULES

Do not squeeze blackheads. As satisfying as it is to watch that lump of crud ease out of your pore, you risk pushing the infection deeper into the pore, causing inflammation, scarring, and making the pore extremely noticeable. Similarly, avoid over-exfoliation, which can worsen blackhead breakouts by spreading the infection.

While pore strips can provide quick extraction and instant enjoyment, their effects can be brief and, if not properly cleansed, can leave the pores prone to being instantly filled up again. The strips do not address the underlying causes of acne, such as excess oil production and genetic/lifestyle influences on the skin's structures, which when treated, result in a more sustainable and long-term treatment. Pore strips and other DIY blackhead extraction methods can potentially be traumatic to the skin structure and are not suggested unless performed by a professional.

Wash your skin on a regular basis to prevent the accumulation of waste, oil, and bacteria, which are the primary culprits. Examine your skincare routine; is it matched to your skin type and concerns? Does it factor in products to maintain oil production? Do you have a sufficient cleanser?

If you are prone to blackheads and congested pores, use oil-free or non-comedogenic cosmetics, lotions, and SPFs. Whilst your skin is designed to pump out excess oil, if it’s struggling with dealing with its natural oil production or battling blockages, it’s always good not to add to the pressure.
